Blog posting- Representation Mia Neira p 4

In the TV show Modern Family there a various stereotypes for how the characters are represented. Mainly Jay and Gloria. Jay for example is represented as a traditional old man who is successful. In the show we see him having a hard time letting go of his older ways and trying to adapt to the more modern ways of his family which is a stereotype of older people. He also has to deal with having to accept his gay son and understand him. In the TV show he tries to break away from his stereotype of being a grumpy old man into being a more modern and understanding man.

For Gloria, she is represented exoticized because her Latina culture is very much overemphasized. She is represented as the stereotypical loud, dramatic, heavy accent Latina. She might also fit the trophy wife stereotype because she is much younger than her husband. Later in her character development we see that she has a lot of ambitions and values which is something we normally don't see for Latina women in the media.

Both of these characters are stereotyped and represented in their own way but are both extremely dramatized in the way they are. One being an extremely grumpy old man who's trying to become more modern and the other one as a dramatic Latina woman. They both represent cultural and even generational differences in this TV show. They both also fight these stereotypes as Jay attempts to be less old school and Gloria shows she has ambitions and morals and she isn't just a trophy wife.

Blog posting - Sound

 

In this project I learned how to use foley sounds to simulate real sounds in videos. I also learned how to join videos and sounds and how to listen and observe to sound more clearly. The directions on this project were to create an audio recording of sounds that portray a 1-2 minute story and 4 of the sounds must be foley sounds. Me and my partner did going to dance class because me and her go to dance together and it is something we are familiar with especially the sounds since dance is all about sounds and beats and music. We did footsteps and beats as well as music.  

 

During brainstorming we planned out what sounds would portray going to a dance class and what noises you would hear. Our outline helped us organize ourselves very well and see what sounds we wanted and in what order. We used iMovie to edit our clips together. I think our sounds were really portraying our story and I think we could improve on not concluding the story because it has to take time in 1-2 minutes.

OWF Blog Post Mia Neira

    For the One Word Film we were instructed to create a 1-1 1/2 minute film revolving around a word assigned to me and my partner with no dialogue or text. Our word was Curious and we decided to make the story about a guy finding a paper with symbols cut in half at school and he gets curious about the other half of it and about what it is so he goes looking and he finds the girl who has the other half of the paper and they realize they go together. 

    In our brainstorming we decided to pick something to do with suspense and mystery to help with our theme of "curious" Here is a picture of our brainstorming sheet-

   Our storyboard helped us visualize our project because it helped us lay everything out before recording and seeing what shots, angles, and movements we wanted to do before doing them. As well as what editing we were going to use. I used iMovie to edit my film.

    I think what we did well was expressing all the camera shots like expressing them in our story and our film as well as not using any dialogue or text. I feel like we could have done a better job at editing more and editing better.

Camera shots

 In this assignment we were told to portray specific shots in the span of 15 shots while creating a story. 

Me and my partner approached this project by making a story of a fight between rock paper and scissors where scissors get beaten by rock and then the paper swallows the rock and then disintegrates, and they all lose in the end. 

I think what we did well was portray exactly what was happening with good detail and good pictures as well as the types of shots we used to show different emotions or meaning. I think what we could improve on is medium shots we needed to take pictures from the half of the “character” and up instead of the whole.
