In movies or films of the genre horror we usually see the characters being in a dark setting that is isolated from other people and they are usually in a state of vulnerability. There are usually monsters, gore, or violence. Some can be more phycological and others can be more based on jump scares.
Genre conventions – production techniques
These films usually include low-key lighting to make a more ominous atmosphere, demonic sounds or ominous music, the setting usually is abandoned places or forest like places. Same with shots for example close ups are used a lot in horror to show fear and long shots can be used to show how a character is alone.
Institutional conventions – how is genre marketed
Horror movies usually cause suspense which brings the viewers in as well as making it really thrilling causing the audience to be engaged and not want to look away.

Hereditary- Hereditary is a very realistic movie because it is about trauma the family goes through, as well as jump scares which are very key in a horror movie, as well as being psychological horror because of the psychosis seen in it.

Smile- Smile has an uncanny feelings behind it because of the uncomfortable feelings and explores trauma and there is also gore which is part of the horror genre.
